250 GTO chassis #5571GT
For the 1964 season, the 250 GTO was given new clothes. Although the chassis, mechanicals and engine remained essentially the same, the new bodywork incorporated many of the aerodynamic advances from the 250LM models. These cars are usually referred to as 250 GTO Series II models, to differentiate them from Series Is.
3 new ’64 chassis were constructed, alongside a further four re-bodied ’62 and ’63 cars. This is one of the new ’64 bodied cars and was delivered to Luigi Chinetti Motors in early 1964. The car proved a winner first time out - with 1st overall in the 1964 2000 km Daytona Continental, driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Phil Hill.
The version illustrated here is the first series II and 1964 Sebring 12hrs entry which finished 7th overall and 1st in the GT3.0 class. Note the roof spoiler, unique to ’64 rear brake vents, short side exhausts, windscreen stay bar, absence of wipers and Goodyear tyres.
