1971 Tyrrell 003

Jackie Stewart won his first World Championship in 1969, driving a Matra Ford. When the Matra board decided to use their own newly developed V12 engine for the 1970 season, Stewart and team manager Ken Tyrrell disagreed and left.

This left the World Champion without a drive so Tyrrell formed his own team, using the Ford DFV in a newly available March 701 chassis. The car was successful, but Tyrrell wanted to be more than a customer team and so developed their own car - the Tyrrell 001 part way through the 1971 season.

The Tyrrell 001 and 002 chassis were much better, eventually evolving into the 003 for the 1971 season. It rapidly became the car to beat and provided Stewart with his second title. The car shown here is Stewart's title winning car with which he won the 1971 British GP.
